By , October 25, 2010 10:40 am

The FINAL installment of Playwrights’ Boot Camp

By , October 19, 2010 6:21 pm

Yes, all good things come to an end… not to mention our fast and furious Playwrights’ Boot Camp! For those of you who missed out on the finale yesterday, as always, here’re some interesting snippets!

Topic:
A Fleeting Thought: Script must be written in the style of realism.

——————————————————————-
Waiting to Jump
Facebook
How does one relate to must-have social networking tool Facebook? A suicidal teenage boy sends a wall post to his friends and family via Facebook for iPhone, notifying them about his intentions to commit suicide. Suddenly another person commented, indicating his suicidal intentions as well. Within 5 minutes of chat, they seem to have known each other thoroughly, of course thanks to the multiple bits of personal information on their Facebook pages. Before his final leap, the teenage boy receives a call from his parents and changes his mind, leaving only a “Let’s continue to keep in touch with Facebook.” The last scene portrays a beloved family photo, without the teenage boy in shot.

Small Town
A small town. A hospital. On the hospital wall. Posters involving sexually transmitted diseases. A group of people. Mandarin and various dialects were spoken. Physically handicapped patients start a game of story-telling. Miraculously, they stand up.
You start to ponder, what causes their physical disability. Is it a weakness that they inflict upon themselves in order to remain in their own worlds?
What would you do, if you were them?

A Fleeting Thought
After these three weeks of grueling Boot Camp sessions, Xiaoyi’s A Fleeting Thought reveals the joys AND woes of the playwrights, directors and actors. But a deeper meaning is intended within the script, setting one to ponder about the definitions of naturalism and realism, and about the blurry line that sets reality and drama apart. Xiaoyi’s writeup came as a pleasant surprise, bringing laughter to many, especially those who were involved in these 4 sessions of Playwrights’ Boot Camp and marking a great end to the performances!

In Creative Juices!, one gets to both play hard and learn much! It’s the highlight of the Arts Education programme brought to you by The Theatre Practice!

What is Creative Juices! exactly?
We firmly believe that an Arts Education is not just to nurture performers in the areas of singing, dancing or acting. More importantly, it provides an all-rounded education to cultivate a child’s character and emotional maturity, creative thinking and appreciation of the arts. A programme encapsulating such ideals thus emerged – Creative Juices!

This November, look forward to two meaningful and fun-filled education activities for parents and children! We’ll see you there!

。。Vinyl records – A collective tune in the making

By , October 12, 2010 5:12 pm

In this week’s Playwrights’ Boot Camp, ‘vinyl records’ was the ingredient for creative inspiration. Although the ‘vinyl records’ were not consistently obvious in all three performances, the post show dialogue unveiled the underlying thoughts of the creative team.

Firstly, audiences candidly shared their interpretations of the performances, highlighting many interesting points and citing puzzling others. It was unanimously agreed that, the quality of the props, sound and light was amazing! (Kudos to the Production Team!)

Next actors and directors poured out their hearts when prompted to comment on the difficulties they faced working on the pieces and how they were overcome. They also reflected on the entire process of this boot camp commenting on issues such as: Should communication be allowed between playwrights and directors before every rehearsal; Should a dramaturg be present to moderate the scripts before handing over to the directors?

Lastly playwrights revealed their motivation behind their stories, each playing a rather different tune:
– To Go or To Stay, by Huang Suhuai, explored the irony behind why certain objects are outcasted while others are worshipped, an inference to the discard of vinyl records verses rise of iPods!
– The Visit, by Cheow Boon Seng, hinged on a nostalgic song Forgotten Times made popular by the movie Infernal Affairs, to depict the scarring from school bullying incidents, a recent hot topic.
– I Killed My Mother, by Liu Xiaoyi, revealed episodic memories of a son and the literal/metaphorical murder of his mother triggered by the different songs played on the gramophone.
By 11pm, we could almost conclude that just like a vinyl record, a performance is a collective tune with the playwrights, directors, actors, audiences enriching the story plot and meaning with every single rotation!

Look forward to the last session next week, the topic is: In a Fleeting Thought: Script must be written in the style of realism

About the POOR THEATRE SERIES
There are poor theatres everywhere. Poor theatre challenges an artist to draw on his imagination to get around or find new ways to overcome the lack of actual resources. We hope to keep the Poor Theatre Series going: to tighten our belts, focus our energies, and create honest theatre of true quality. We also hope that the series will broaden our scope, and develop into a platform for our emerging artists.
