The Story After Ah Q starts at the end of Lu Xun’s best-loved novella, The True Story of Ah Q after the titular Ah Q was executed by revolutionaries. All seems normal and calm in Weizhuang, the village where Ah Q used to live. Well, everyone seems normal, or are they? That is when things get increasingly troublesome!!
Here is a sneak peek at the profile of various colourful characters in Weizhuang. This is but only an intriguing start!
赵太爷 Master Zhao
He is the elite and landlord of The Village Yet-to-Be. He is also a wealthy, influential and formidable man. He used to hire Ah Q for odd jobs. However, after his mansion was robbed, he never regains his former glory.
吴妈 Amah Wu
Widowed and the only female maid in the Mansion of Zhao. She is also the one who Ah Q wanted to bed. Worried that Ah Q’s advances may have tainted her reputation, she cried uncontrollably for days, until she was appeased with cash. Ah Q actually felt that her feet are too big.
小尼姑 The Little Nun
The Little Nun is often harassed and ridiculed by Ah Q in the streets. She hates Ah Q and cusses that Ah Q will not have any offspring, which eventually came true.
王胡 Beard Wang
Originally known as “Beard Scabby Wang” but his scabies are nothing special compared to his distinctive beard, hence the conversion to “Beard Wang”. His body build is indirectly proportional to his intelligence, if there’s any. He fought with Ah Q and won by banging Ah Q’s head on the wall five times.
假洋鬼子 Fake Foreign Devil
He is the eldest son of Master Qian and studied at the foreign college in town and travelled to Japan for further studies. He returns after half a year, became a foreign devil and have his pigtail cut off, which angered his father and saddened his wife, who made him wear a fake pigtail to save their face. Ah Q thought this was really shameful.
小D Small D
Despite being poor, weak and easily frightened, he manages to replace Ah Q to be the most popular odd-job helper. Ah Q undoubtedly was affected by this and initiated a fight with Small D on the streets. Due to the hot weather, they eventually ended this terribly unexciting pigtails-yanking battle in a draw.
黑狗 Black Dog
The Amazing Blackie, the dog. Owned by the Small Nun, it is the guardian of the nunnery’s vegetable garden. Black Dog barks and chases Ah Q when he stole their carrots. Its only regret is not being able to land a bite on Ah Q’s fat thighs.
How will these characters come together in this delightful tragicomedy? And what exactly is their relationship to Ah Q? Find out more in The Story After Ah Q!
