The path of enlightenment, Zen masters have always called the “pathless path” because it does not appear to be a path at all.

It cannot appear as a path, but just for the purpose of communication we will arbitrarily call it “the second path”.

The second path is not instantaneously; it happens in the present. You cannot desire it; you cannot be ambitious for it. It is said that the path of enlightenment is like a bird flying in the sky: it leaves no footprints behind it. Every bird will have to make its own footprints, but they disappear immediately as the bird flies. ~Osho

On the wing

Author: tanhaur, 07 19th, 2010

There’s such a sociological term “cocooning” to describe one of our current major living trend and lifestyle in the modern society. And it has been a while that I’ve made visual comparison between man made structures with little birds flying freely in the sky.

You may sense the different vibration from the two complete different worlds, as to say, with such a great contrast in their visual statement, it makes sense for us to ask these questions: -

Beside surrounded by walls, are there any other barriers that we have created in our own life?

With more walls building up, are we getting lesser time to interact with others or the nature?

Physical walls could be well avoided, how about the invisible walls in our own thoughts?

I would suggest to take a break at the sidewalk Café, sipping a cup of house
brewed coffee and watches the pigeons catching fun and turning to our table for food. Just a moment to be with yourself, not doing anything but simply observe life going on around us, and searching for what we really want to be.

Deep inside you, enjoy this peaceful moment of “now”.

Journal – Black Mountain

Author: tanhaur, 05 28th, 2010

Tan Haur - Pix for Journal-03

An art journal by Tan Haur: -

Black Mountain, Australia

It is eucalypt forest buzzing with the sound of cicadas and heavy with the scent of gum leaves on hot summer days. That is the main reason that I have chosen Black Mountain as my foremost subject to work with. The highest point is at 830m above sea level.  Photos and drawings were made along the way; bushes and tree barks were the main topic. I observed and captured each subject matter in multiple angle views; this will result into layered of imagery appearing onto one plane to echo the picture in my mind and “change” as phenomena in nature as well as life.

“Life is constantly changing. Life is change. Only one thing is permanent, and that is change itself. To accept this changing exercise with all its seasons and moods, this constant flow, which never stops for a single moment, is to be blissful.” [1]

I was fascinated by the formation of trees along the steep hill, patterns of the tree barks illuminated by the sun rays and the illusion of cross woven branches hinting a form of system in the chaotic world.

“Chaos is what a handful of theorists steeped in math and computer know-how are calling their challengingly abstract new look at nature in terms of nonlinear dynamics.” [2] To me, “Chaos” is the rule and pattern of nature; to a certain extent there is logic in it that humans try to understand and define it so far, and yet there is so much unknown beyond our current knowledge.

Back to the art studio, all the images done on site as well as the sense of engagement with nature has created strong references for my art creation in the second phase. Splashes of colors and marks created on papers were simply sentiment from the heart and pictures from the mind. They are not the realistic painting of the shape and forms, as far beyond that are fragments of memories and insights of the subject matter.

These paintings and drawings were further merged with photo images in the digital space, and translated back as a printed material; cordially transformed pixels back to ink dots. An enormous experience while ones constantly move in and out between the physical and virtual canvas. This echoes “perception” & “change” in Buddhist terminology as mentioned in my earlier write up.

“Perception” – in Buddhist terminology.

Author: tanhaur, 05 28th, 2010

Tan Haur - Pix for Journal-01

An art journal by Tan Haur: -

“Perception” – in Buddhist terminology.

In the Buddhist view of life, human beings are blessed with six senses: the five physical of seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling, as well as the sense door of the mind – the sixth sense that takes in such intangibles as emotion, thought, and intention. Sense impressions from these spheres of contact are organized into meaning through the faculty of perception, which within Buddhist terminology means the act of recognizing an “object.” With vision, for example, the basic effect of sight yields only the primitive sense experience of color in a certain form. Our mind then rapidly and almost automatically interprets that form and color to constitute an object of “the world,” such as a chair, woman, sky, or tree. That one person may perceive “things” differently than another is not considered a mistake but simply a natural consequence of our individuality, with our differing cultural backgrounds, personal histories, emotional states, and tendencies of mind.

Buddhist teaching tells us that what we call “the world” is not fixed in a rigid and predefined way, but rather is created moment by moment through the interaction between external “things” and our own senses. This understanding leads to a loosening of our inflexible beliefs about the world as we come to realize that the sense experience, by its very nature, is insubstantial. Coming to see life in this way is considered by the Buddha to be the gateway to freedom and the end of suffering.

This essentially flimsy nature of being, which the Buddha termed “emptiness,” is described clearly in a text called “A Mass of Foam” (Samyutta Nikaya 22:95): If a keen-sighted person were to see a mirage and reflect on it, he would find it empty, hollow, and void of substance. For what essence could there be in mirage? So one who reflects on perception will find it empty, hollow, and void of substance.” The text continues:

Material form is like a mass of foam

And feelings but an airy bubble.

Perception is like a mirage

And mental formations like a banana tree (which has no core).

Consciousness is merely a magic show. [1]

Although our world is insubstantial and, in this sense, empty, it is also rich in beauty and meaning. It is through understanding both these aspects that we come to see life as a magical arrangement. In fact, to reveal both beauty and emptiness seems to me the noble function of art. [1]

‘上。下。’中所展出的作品成果正是艺术家陈豪置身于大自然不同海拔位置时,感官上所揣摩出的艺术想法。在这样 多层次的影像串联并相容的艺术作品里,充分地表达了陈豪对于‘时间’,‘瞬间’和‘空间’的哲思。以自身的文化背景为基础,陈豪与高耸的山峰和深沉的海洋进行了心灵对话,且把如此抽象的经验转换成自身的视觉语言。

Oneness

Author: tanhaur, 05 25th, 2010

“Oneness” symbolizes the quality of unity. The core axis of our conscious and subconscious mind, it harnesses the past and the present; the good and the bad; the found and the lost. And it brings all existence into one, there is no starting point and there is no ending point, simply like the stream flow into the river and sea, then evaporated into the sky, rain onto the earth and flow back to the stream again.Human race is part of the cosmos, we are different on the circumference, but we are one at the center. And to know this oneness is enlightenment.

Location:

Revisited the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station in mid November this year. Nothing has changed much since my last visit five years ago. The central waiting hall has tall ceiling and decorated with artistic panel walls showing images of typical Malaysian scenes. Feeling is good, very peaceful and slow pace here compare to most of the Mass Rapid Transit Stations around Singapore. Will bring along a coffee-table-book next round and try the Teh Tarik 拉茶 at the Indian tea stall just next to the boarding platform.

Some facts about Tanjong Pagar Railway Station: -

Tanjong Pagar railway station, also called Keppel Road railway station or Singapore railway station, is a railway terminus owned by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the main railway operator in Malaysia. The land on which the station and the KTM railway tracks in Singapore are situated is held by KTM on a 999-year lease.
