Q : Issit difficult to write a good Melody?
Q : Do we need a lot of music technique/knowledge to write a good melody?
Q : Do we need to spend a lot of $$$ to produce a demo?
Q : Do we need our room to be like a spaceship? With chock full of studio equipment with their flashing lights?
About 2 weeks ago I did a free trial workshop in school, for those interested in Jim and me’s Melody in Songwriting course. Actually Xiaohan and me have been doing this quite a lot for the last few years. And as always, we discover that we’re not doing it enough, coz people still have this misconception of what’s actually needed to write a good Melody. So…lets say it again!
The answer to the common misconceptions and questions at the starting of this post all points to…Ans : NO!!!
It’s not difficult, U don’t need to have a lot of musical knowledge, and even if U’re dead broke, I’m sure U gotta at least have a handphone on your body to record your melodies.
What U do need.
1. A Voice (Price = Free)
2. A Heart (Price = Free)
3. Passion (Price = Free)
The minimum tools needed
1. Basic, veeerrrryyy basic Knowledge* of ONE multi timbral instrument(meaning instruments that can play more than one note at once, most commonly being Piano/Keyboard or Guitar)
2. A Recording device to record your ideas (your mobile phone, your laptop, to GarageBand, Protools and all that spaceship lighting, Price = it’s up to U!)
So what can FM PMS(Pop Music School) do for U? Well, apart from these minimal requirements, U could also do with short cuts, tips, ‘rules’ and experience handed down from our seniors to today. Jim and me have been exposed to songwriting tips from Taiwanese Producers/Songwriters and also from analysing the stuff we listened to. There’s more or less a standard guideline to writing a memorable melody YOU can write that can be enjoyed not just by U, but by others. Whether U have the aspiration to write songs for the mainstream music market or for your band or for that guy/girl U’re trying to go after. We can guide U, advise, and polish U up with our experience, alongside with your minimum requirements.
Remember, a good memorable Melody that attracts even non musicians HAS to be simple enough that even they can grasp it. If U think of it this way, U will realise that it’s not as intimidating as U think! As with all things, Fear is your greatest enemy!
So yeaahhh…
*Basic, veeerrrryyy basic Knowledge of an instrument means
1. U can play AT LEAST to the key of C family chords(C Dm Em F G Am)
2. U can roughly play in time in 4/4

Seriously speaking, I think the melody composing class was great!! Which left most of us upset when it ended! haha…
Anyway, i guess other than learning heaps on melody composing, it was also a great exposure on accelerating skills in picking chords, chords progression, chim chords, n lots about keyboard/guitar…I never felt that i learn that much on keyboard till i took this class! It was a great learning experience!!! Too bad there isnt part 2…
Btw..there are so so many different groups in facebook! I am getting a little confused with all of their functions and purpose! haha

yeah agree with bluecell.haha! what i learnt most would be the perspectives to look at when making music ba.. the greatest lessons are the ones that get u started!

Hi, i’m glad i browse to this website. After reading your blog on how to write a good melody, i feel very encouraged to pursue this interest with less worries.
I am attending lessons in FM to brush up my keyboard playing for the composing class. But i feels inconfident towards the end due to my limited music knowledge & unstable keyboard playing. (pausing when changing inversions/key)
Can i still join the upcoming class? I do not wish to give up & now putting more effort in practising…
