I think it’s this time of the year, last year around this time, I was also constantly self reflecting on life in it’s current state. A few things however sparked me to think of this. And think of what others are feeling.

Jaycee told me his dad used to survive with 5 HK dollars a day doin what he enjoys, with his primary one school drop out qualifications. Jaycee’s mom also had a very tough upbringing when she was younger, striking out to make it in the tough Taiwan entertainment industry. She even laughed at her fortune teller that she used to go regularly when one visit he suddenly said she’ll have 10 000 Taiwan NT(or 100 000, I can’t remember) the next year.

i watched IP Man yesterday, freaking freak out power movie, inspired by a true story…There was a part of the movie where IP Man had the reverse fortune of Mr Chan, where once he was super rich, big house, nice wife and kids. And suddenly the Japanese took all away from him, but he was still optimistic, having a happy family, surviving off one sweet potato that he saved by not eating it himself. (A Question however…I’m sure some of u guys know…how the hell did he get so rich in the 1st place?).

That day, I was driving along with a friend in my car, and we happened to see a musician that we both knew, walking with his girlfriend on the road, probably catching a cab or a bus. My friend, a non musician(incidentally, also the one who doesn’t know how to convert CDs into mp3s), then said, hmm…is @#$$%# gonna be playing in pubs forever? If that’s so, how’s he gonna settle down? how’s he gonna get married, buy a house or have kids?
I was quite mystified with this question. I said errr, this guy does quite a bit of gigs, I think he can earn about at least 3.5-5 k a month. Isn’t that enough? In which she replied, yeah for himself maybe, but then he would NEED a car, a house, send his kids to the best school, have fish in every home cooked meal for the kid for him/her to be happy. blah blah.
When I heard this, I suppose this is why it’s a proven fact(provided by Ah Hoon, a psychology university student) that majority of younger girls tend to choose older more successful guys as their partners, for stablity and security. I am not complaining, coz I’m an older guy hahaha…But I still had to say my peace…
Why is 3.5-5 is not enough to start a family? (and now I’m also thinking, And wait a minute, what about the girl? The girl no need contribute anything meh?) Why do we NEED a car to be happy? does the best school kids always get the best jobs? Blah blah?
These 3 Sparks are enough for a long time of reflection on my part.
Being older now, and having seen quite a lot. I think we have all became SPOILT BRATS, me included. Especially being too comfy here in Singapore…I don’t think U need to send your kid to the best, most expensive business school to become the best businessman. i don’t think U need to have a car just to have a kid. I survived ok with no really bad medical reports from the last 30 years, eating out, and sometimes still having fish, but that fish costs 2.50, with rice in those economy food stores(U still can find that meal now 
Yes, sometimes I will have flashes of doubt that I might not have enough $$$ from the hard work that I put in, but i will self meditate i guess hahha, and remind myself that, happiness, and success, does not depend on the $$$ that U have, or the $$$ that U earn from your efforts. But from the self satisfaction of achievement. . Success = 成功 – and that means to SUCCEED in your EFFORTS. Not 成钱. (btw, I got that from this singlish tow kay book that Satan gave me, it’s a damn funny book). If my actions yielded results, even if not in monetary terms, it will just add on to my credit as a human being in success terms. That brings satisfaction and satisfaction can result in happiness…
I have met HELL LOT of rich people in my career, I talking about people who buy their own planes, or won’t even blink an eye after spending 5000pounds on 4 drinks (vintage whiskey, no less) in a quaint little cock tail bar in Paris, or people so famous that they can sell condoms with their name on it, or buying a Lamborghini for their sons as presents blah blah…For everyone of us who is ‘rich’ there will always be someone richer, or waaayyy richer, that’s unless U’re Bill Gates 
But I’m sure there’s someone who’s richer too. We can never stop looking up in envy over that greener grass. But what we can do is, if we have $$$, cool! Spend it. If we don’t have, it’s cool too. We can still enjoy ourselves with what we have. This is Singapore laahh, compared to other countries, we are a hella lucky lot. But that doesn’t mean we should get all ATAS about it. Coz on top of us, there’s another lot who’s even more well off then we are.
It all never ends. So why not, we all look at ourselves, and be happy with what we have? Spend and get THE BEST…within our means. And if our hard work yields successful results, if it’s $$$, good! Spend it! if it’s not. Be happy and contented with the present and work harder and accumalate our credits in life with the hope of an even brighter future. Everyone can live within their means. In that sense, we are never too poor to not be able to survive…or be happy…for ourselves, or for our family.
So back to Mrs Chan, She did earn that amount of $$ that the fortune teller predicted and she went back to thank that guy and has been visiting him ever since. Mr Chan did tell me once too that when he was young, he really truly worked his ass off in what he believes in, never had the chance to play, and now he’s older, more successful, it’s time for him enjoy what he worked so hard for.
We will ALWAYS survive.
Let the New Year begin!!!!! I wish each and everyone of U LOADS OF SUCCESS for 09!!!!
PS : A good reporter friend of mine emailed me and told me, not just my other friends, she also thinks that I’m rich…zzzz…well…if I really was ‘rich’, I wouldn’t be sitting down and self reflecting on this issue haahaha. I would probably be thinking 3.5-5k is not enough for me to bring a kid into this world. or maybe not? Ah well, shall talk about that in the next post…

it’s called TowKay Ho Seh Boh? (How to become a successful TowKay) by Ah Chuan…it’s funny lor, the whole book is written in Singlish and hokkien pin yins! hahhaa
