What Kind of Parents Are You?

Parenting is not an easy job – in fact, to me, it’s a highly demanding profession. However, no parents are schooled and equipped with the necessary skills and know-hows to bring up children. Likewise, no children come into this world with an instruction manual or guidebook on how to grow and groom them to become healthy and successful adults.

We are all made differently, so some of us would find it easy to connect with our children, some others find it tremendously difficult to even communicate with their children. So what kind of parents are you? The Bazi (八字)system divides parents into five different types, each with a different parenting style

The “Cool” Parent

  • dislikes setting parent-child boundary
  • approachable and open to children
  • always look on the bright side of things

The “Super-nice” Parent

  • very committed and concerned parents
  • very accommodating to children’s needs
  • always fair and respects own children
  • doesn’t let emotions influence own actions

The “No-nonsense” Parent

  • great at inspiring and motivating children
  • becomes the children’s best buddy
  • believes that a family that plays together, stays together

The “Kiasu” Parent

  • gives children a sense of structure and discipline in life
  • instills principles in children and expects them to adhere to the high standards set
  • extremely giving and sacrifices own needs for children

The “Bossy” Parent

  • very organised and methodical in managing children
  • the driving force in the family, instilling the can-do spirit in children and lead by example
  • tends to be demanding and micromanaging

We have our own character flaws, so don’t go away with the idea that we as parents are always right. It’s important to know how your children see you too. To connect with your children, you also need to know who they are and their approach towards life.
