Hi MDA Officer,

Attached please find our detailed drawings for your consideration. This will give you a much better idea than verbal descriptions how the set-up will look like at Toa Payoh & Bukit Gombak. At Marine Parade, the enclosure will be smaller with less mats and seating area as the space is not as big.

As you can see from the drawings, passers-by would not be able to see the performance area from outside the enclosure (from near and from far). The entrance will be closed during the performance, and the exits will be blocked by our exhibition panels at 2m high. The advisory will be printed all around the enclosure in 4 languages, and the height of the characters will be ~25cm so that it’s visible from far away.

We have also surveyed the surroundings of our performance area. At Marine Parade, there are no HDB flats around, so that would not pose a problem. At Toa Payoh and Bukit Gombak, there are HDB flats nearby. But since we will be putting the advisory all around, and we will ensure that the printing is big enough, residents living on high floors will be able to see the advisory first, before they decide whether to watch the performance or not. For blocks further away, if they can’t read our advisory, they would not be able to see our performance clearly either.

We hope you will consider our proposal, and advise us of any changes to the configuration to meet the requirements to perform this piece outdoors.

We look forward to your favourable reply.

Thanks!

Please allow me to share the drawings that we’d submitted to support our proposition. It’s a pity that no one sees these wonderful sketches that one of our ARTivators painstakingly did, after taking into consideration the height of an average person and working out the ideal height of the banners, to “barricade” our performance but still have it in a sort of open structure.

Hi Drama Box,

Thanks for the detailed drawing with dimensions. It certainly does make it clearer to envisage your plan.
However, the whole set-up remains too open for an indoor requirement. Given the short lead time to your planned performance dates, pls advise us of the new indoor locations so that we can issue the licence for the indoor performance.

Regards,
MDA Officer

Unfortunately, our counter-proposal was rejected.

Hi MDA Officer,

We plan to continue putting up performances at the same venues on the same nights, but with a different set of programme. The programme will include a different play of 5-10 minutes (with the same cast), community singing, and our exhibition on Drama Box’s 10 years of community theatre.

Attached please find the content of the exhibition. This is the latest version, about 98% complete, and is only pending some final touch-ups. There will be six exhibition panels showcasing the history of Drama Box’s community theatre through pictures and some of our exhibits from previous shows. There will also be 2 mannequins displaying our community tour costumes and a video interview of happy school members (portable DVD player).

We will be submitting our song list, the name of our lead singer, as well as our script by Monday, for your approval of license to run our programme on the same dates:

3 Sep’10: Open space at Toa Payoh Central, outside Toa Payoh Library
4 Sep’10: At Bukit Batok West Ave 5 Hard Court
10 Sep’10: At Blk 87, Marine Parade Central Hard Court
11 Sep’10: Open space at Toa Payoh Central, outside Toa Payoh Library

Please advise what other information we’ll need to provide for the complete application of the license based on the new programme.

Thanks!

To maintain the integrity of the piece, we stand by our decision that the performance is meant to be staged outdoors. At the same time, we remember our commitment to our audience and the community. Hence, we’re doing a totally different piece (different script, same venues, same dates, same topic, ie CENSORSHIP), and are now awaiting approval for our performance license. We’ll keep updating!
