“Sad sad poster begins our discovery of what the true concept and goal of this movie is…
Singlish Summary of entire film:
War sux…Fight wars bad…but niah niah have to do it. Because it is home,
just like National Service. Kao Bei Kao Bu, but in the end, necessary.
and Love in this film? Orh love…
(Yoda Voice )
Love, Necessary. Make people strong, it does.
Not just kisses, love is.
Sacrifice, you must..
Mmm…(Yoda’s “mmmm”)
CHINESE HISTORY:
The film made me interested in chinese history again,
simply because:
i don’t believe anything that is happening on screen!
HISTORICAL:
My search led me to some crazy facts!
There are actually 5 Mu Lans in History!
(From: http://www.martialartess.com/blog/2009/07/famous-fighting-women-mulan/)
Wei Mu Lan – (Early Han Dynasty) Died in Battle
Wei Mu Lan 2 – (Sui Dynasty) Promoted to general. Commits suicide after Emperor forces her to be concubine, after discovering she is woman.
Zhu Mu Lan – General, and also died-ed.
Ren Mu Lan – Wealthy family. Dress in armour to defend homeland against rebel forces.
Hua Mu Lan – Ming Dynasty
Using the amazing creative juice of Ding An, i pondered.
CREATIVE
SCRIPT CONCEPT:

What if the script revolved around the reincarnation of Mu lan instead?
It seems that she is a recurring character in history with the same name. Anyone find that a tad bit strange?
But alas the script this time, was simpler and much more boring…..
I tell you which script i actually prefered.

Disney’s Mu Lan. (70 million to make, 300 million earned.)

“Complete with very own dragon Mushu!”
* can’t we ever just translate magic into english as “Muo Shu?” why always Mushu, sounds like Moooo-shu.. Just like in Dynasty Warriors. Chao CHao, becomes Cow Cow.
There seems to be some co-relation between english-chinese translations, and cows? Weird Science.
Wanna know the Director?
Jingla Ma, the director who gave us Tokyo Raiders
“Tokyo Raiders”

Hey i loved Tokyo raiders. It was funny, but it had that sass ! it was almost Japanese anime-ish, and i think it
employed Cowboy bebop style of “Jazz Fighting scenes”
which really added a new dimension to the entertainment value
check out the youtube link to see what i mean!
Tokyo Raiders YOUTUBE LINK!!!!!!!!!!!
OK i know it would be weird if he did mu lan this way too.
And i do love his lines inside the film
Sadly, as i watched it, i sensed that the people around me
were laughing alot. But they weren’t laughing where they were supposed to
they were laughing cos it’s become a little lame…
IN this time and age, where Zhang Yi Mou with his less than impressive Curse of the Golden Lotus
but who also set the standard for MASSive army scenes
when you watch this show, you could see that it seemd like a smaller budget chinese war epic.
Not many huge battle scenes or any Lord of the ring CGIs
and definitely neither the scale nor wit of Chi Bi…the three kingdoms epic by John Woo
(who mission impossible 2 us with his high flying sibei how lian characters actions!)
Sigh
Then how?
War epic leh. Excellent acting from the the chinese actors doesn’t save the entire production as
a piece on its own.
I can reflect back to my own Kallang Roar movie as well lah
i think you want to see more EPIC right?
If i can’t wow you, i can’t K Roar 2 yet!
and it has everything to do with budget and scale unfortunately
Yep.
The curse of the epic films – Money!
MORAL of the STORY:
“War…Fought by man, won by woman.”

My good friend Ezaad, Mr Dollah Kassim’s son, had an idea.
Why not use the commentary found in my movie, Kallang Roar the movie, to play in his father’s ears to encourage him to wake up?
So we extracted the audio from our movie, and passed it to his mum in a disc.
Hopefully this helps even the slightest.
Mr Dollah Kassim fell into a coma, after experiencing a shortage of breath during a veteran’s game
the cause should be insufficient rest the day before,
but if you are a soccer player, you and I both know
the temptation for true football lovers is tremendous,
True to his love, he played even against better advice.
Prior to this Audio Idea, he was already showing signs of improvement.
Transferred from the ICU, he is now still in tan Tock Seng, but showing better signs.
His eyes are slightly opened as i saw him, he does not need breathing assist any longer,
and i believe he even sort of burped and moved his body a little when i saw him.
His wife and son are still cheering him on from the sidelines.
I was told by his wife, that people still visit him every day, just like the last time i visited him in ICU, and saw ezaad.
I can tell she is a very supportive person, just like what i see in Ezaad.
I told her not to worry. I told her what i remembered of him, coming on to my film set, helping me answer an interview
to try and lend a bit more of his star status to my small film. After he finished, he pat my back and smiled, like “no sweat, all for Kallang Roar.”,
which help me re-vitalize my determination in the darker days of filming.
Then there was that other day, he came and told me h observed that Rajagopal should be using his right leg. I told him, it was deliberate, because
in my movie, he injured his truly god’s gift – his left foot, and has to curb with returning to becoming a hero against his own physical condition, and
the over expectations of the public. Stuff like that. He nodded, gave me my little director’s worth of creative leeway, but did proceed to speak lengthly
to my actor Anwar Hadi,

who is portraying him. this I, really enjoyed, and thanked, for his wealth of experience, characterization.
Sometimes, i wonder if i let him down, cos i made his character more of the joker type, which the audience immediately loved Anwar’s oustanding performance for.
But that’s just my depiction, not everyone likes to be the comedian. The Dollah Kassim i met everyday, was a soft spoken type of nice guy. but nonetheless, his son,
told me that he really enjoyed the film. I know i can’t make everybody happy making a film, but i praised the skies, for at least making him happy.
So there he is now, that same man who helped me alot, who didn’t know me before.
For the cause of Kallang Roar, i still hoped that my movie was a blockbuster, if not simply, just to spread the good word, and tell everyone what
these guys have done.
Mr Dollah Kassim still has much to do. As I discuss with Ezaad, there are things that legends can pass down to the next generation.
For example, did you realize that we have a tradition of our Number 17 strikers with oustanding diving headers? Quah Kim Song 1977, Fandi Ahmad 1994.
What about our banana kicks, now i see Shaiful doing it. what about our defensive know hows, Samad is no doubt teaching his son.
Dollah Kassim’s Gelek.

Stand up Dollah Kassim. Plenty more people you can touch. Even if skills cannot be transferred, there is still heart.
Sincerely
Ding An

You don’t know Dollah Kassim.

If you knew Dollah Kassim, maybe you would know what a gracious, soft spoken, big hearted man he was.

If you knew Dollah Kassim, maybe you would have known an entire generation of legendary
footballers who fought and won something simply astounding, but are now lost and forgotten

If you knew Dollah Kassim, you would know Michael Jackson,
for both were “Gelek Kings”.

If you knew Dollah Kassim, you would know how much he helped a new film maker like me,
make a good film about Singapore and football.
About a time when a nation’s pride and perspective on local football was high,
Only to see that the modern day football talk, is now about EPL rights.
Such that, instead of pumping more money to develop our own talents.
We pay and pump our hard earned good money to buy european club jerseys,
new cable television set up boxes,
to give playboy footballers their multi billion salaries,
while our own country’s football and footballers
are being criticized harshly by ourselves
for lack of enthusiasm.

If you knew Dollah Kassim, you would know that his generation were part time footballers,
that didn’t complain, put your head down, hard work and move forward. Paid little, and yet a
nation’s expectation fell on their shoulders. So it couldn’t have been money they were playing
for….but something else.
If you knew Dollah,
you would know Anwar Hadi, who played him to perfection, but who like Dollah, will shy from
the limelight, never self promote, waiting only for you to discover that he could possibly be
the next big thing in the Singapore acting circles.

if you know Dollah, you would know ezaad, his son. One of the finest gentleman, and unsung
hero, i have met in my life, who dedicates so much enthusiasm to helping people, who is now
praying hard with head bowed beside him in Tan tock Send, awaiting his recovery.

If you know Dollah, you would know his comrades, his band of brothers
who went through hell
training under Uncle Choo, and who will stick by him.
and who are planning a party for him once he wakes up.

If you knew Dollah Kassim,
you will not only try to find out why the Kallang stadium is empty
but do something about it
because no matter what excuse we give,
There should never be more Singaporean Liverpool fans in Kallang Stadium
than Singaporean Singapore fans.
It is simply not acceptable.
This is Kallang Stadium, not Anfield.
If man utd were to come, I will proudly don a Singapore jersey,
and support my lions.
I will always know where i stand, because i was born here.

If only you knew Dollah Kassim….
But, you don’t know Dollah……………
Neither do i, to be honest.
I only know him as this nice Uncle, who had the skill and drive to complete
a dream i always had.
to do something great and be proud of being Singaporean.
So like most of you,
I only know him as that good samaritan that helped me alot.
But what i do know
is that we should always remember our legends,
Just as Uncle Choo is still missing in the sports council’s museum of heroes.

A country without heroes, is a country with no need for patriotism, no need for unity,
of self sacrificing for you neighbour, and that is a very scary thought.
Dollah Kassim like all the footballers of their generation did these things
Sacrifice family time, their jobs, putting everything on the line,
to teach us what it means to be us.
to try to fight for everyone else, a world that not many people can understand
Why football is the very fabric of our nation, just like our ARTS industry.
the final missing piece and soul of meritocracy Singapore.
A country cannot live cannot breathe without legends.
Wake Up Dollah Kassim,
The Kallang Roar still needs you…
Sincerely
Ding An
Hi.
(tired but enthusiastic wave)
R E S E R V I C E

No, NATIONAL SERVICE is not the only tough sian thing that
every able bodied man has to go through.
Just when you thought it was over, there is still RESERVICE.
Was recalled to reservice. Worked beyond point of fatigue,
got two punctured marks on my arm, that seem like either
a snake bite or a vampire. told my friends in advance to run
if they start to see me behaving oddly in front of blood.
Yes, it is sianz, but what to do? The price of peace and citizenship.
Outfield for 4 days in the jungle. never stopped working.
now that i am out, i am still moodless. because today, saturday,
is where my mobilization is about to occur, right after my ICT ended on friday.
They just won’t let u go would they? Oh! I just received my call!!
And all this time, I am still working on my love movie script.
A LOVE STORY MOVIE SCRIPT for goodness sake! in a most loveless of time.
But I think i still need a few days to recover to find out what exactly is the
meaning of life, for at the moment, i think the meaning of life is just waking
up early carrying things, lots of logistics, some reprimanding, and endless
mobile phone ringing to tell u to do stuff, where ever u are, what ever time.
I told my producer that anything i write right now, or else the cinema audience
will go like this picture below……….

And sunday is my BIRTHDAY……………
(a pause and silence)
and in the middle of camp, i heard the news.
Mr Dollah Kassim collapsed in the veterans game
Then all my groaning and moodiness meant nothing.
(though the “Sian-ness” still lingered)
but my thoughts were on praying for a speedy recovery for this man.
I know ezaad his son. Great guy and acted in my movie as Crazy horse,
some of you who have seen the movie, will know who i am referring to.
Both father and son were relentless in lending support to my movie cause,
and i am forever indebted to them.
So i really hope if u are reading this, to lend your support whatever it may
be to Mr Dollah kassim your footballing legend, your footballing hero
who is now still unconscious at Tan Tock Seng hospital.
Wake up Dollah
Sincerely
Ding An

A few things happened recently.
I went to SICC. Singapore Island Country Club. They were showing my movie as a National Day Treat. Thank u SICC!

Sat down and have a chat with some K Roar Enthusiast, I asked one group what made them come to see the show.
One father told me, “oh, my mother was just here in the morning, said that she enjoyed it very much, so here i am with my kid.”
After the show, he told me he liked it as well….

another conversation with another more elderly person, revealed that the movie was totally relevant to his generation. The auntie, told me he loved the old days of Quah Kim Song, then she showed me with break dancing vigor, how he “Zooom” here zoom there. She herself was “geleking” (Gelek King Dollah Kassim) around to exxaggerate how much she loved Team Singapore.

Then the third conversation, another man who simply loved the show asked me

“So, is it out in the cinemas?”

So ok, We did learn a big marketing lesson this time. Movies will still be movies, have to have that in your face effect. I would like to say, Everybody, Trust me, my name is Cheng Ding An, i vow to write really cool funny stories with a tinge of morality, not too harsh, light hearted funny, comedy, and now going into romance, that you will like….
But I can’t, and it doesnt work that easy…and marketing is big money, Pixar animation marketing budget for Singapore alone could be up to 1 million dollars….i have used less to make the entire movie Kallang Roar.

So here we are This sunday, the effect i wanted. The entire Nation sees it. More people can tell me what they loved or did not love about it. More opinions, so i can serve them better. Also takes some marketing though, but At least on OKTO, its there, and its after National Day Rally some more, THANK U OKTO people for giving me a shot!
So here it is Kallang Roar 2nd Life, or maybe 3rd life…..

Thinking back, i have no regrets making this movie, with the limited experience i have. I have still alot to improve, but me and Kay Siu, are proud, as well as all the production people…

actors…..

all the old aunties who climbed the stairs of Kallang Stadium to “Mock” fill up the entire empty stadium for green screen effect – just to put a smile on your face all of us are ready

Here we go!

Extremely saddened.
Just as when the word “Boyband” was coined, and Backstreet Boys became out of fashion..
I have had to be a closet Michael Jackson Fan for the longest of times.
I watched his videos everyday when i was in primary school. Every afternoon! That Smooth criminal Video:

But As the world bathes in emotional hiccups and tears,
or others debate about “Why should we care?”
Why don’t we remember him for the great music and hope he has brought instead.
Michael Jackson Technologies:
[Just some fun facts that i just only recently learnt about him!!!!]

Emotional Hiccups:
(not to be confused with “Hee Hee”)
In the mid-1970s, the singer adopted a “vocal hiccup” as seen in “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)”. The purpose of the hiccup—somewhat like a gulping for air or gasping—was to help promote a certain emotion, be it excitement, sadness or fear
Rights to Beatles:
Michael Jackson reportedly paid 47million to buy out 150 to 260 Beatle Songs. This investment has billion dollar returns.
For “Smooth Criminal”, Jackson experimented with an innovative “anti-gravity lean” in his performances, for which he was granted US Patent No. 5,255,452.

His albums:
“OFF THE WALL”

Many of us might not know about this PRe-thriller album,
but it was his breakthrough effort and it did earn a whopping 20million
Ah everybody knows this one.
I actually found it in my father’s Cassette rack, and i was happy like crazy.
THRILLER!

Of this album, my favorite is actually Human Nature, (wonderful MTV too)

who could forget the Monster Dance?
It even inspired a Bollywood Spoof Version:

Soulfully,
“Dirty Diana” is really cool. “Leave me Alone” of course u know. “Speed Demon” is damn cute.
The special song here, just for the repeating rift is “Another part of me” – i remember it from the michael Jackson Video game

The best video game rift haha.
[but i prefered this Sega Version]

But truly bluely the best unforgettable song, with a super extended MTV, with robots and power ups
is Smooth criminal. Damn i still miss that exaggerated MTV, that is damn cool.
“Hee Hee”
This is the peak of his career i reckon
Michael Jackson’s
Dangerous

1. Jam (5:39)
2. Why You Wanna Trip On Me (5:24)
3. In The Closet (6:32)
4. She Drives Me Wild (3:41)
5. Remember The Time (4:00)

12. Keep The Faith (5:58)
13. Gone Too Soon (3:22)

Actually the song” dangerous” is just ok. But the big hits are like JAM,

my favorite song of all time “Who is it”
The beautiful will you be there…
Gone too soon,
and wow
i just saw “Give in to me” Super rock ballad. Love it.

if i go on any further, i will just name every damn song,
because it is one of those albums that are simply…wow
diversity, and almost ALL THE SONGS ARE NICE
my mother always said “It’s so hard to buy an album from an artist
where all the songs are nice”
ah there u go…an album where all the songs are nice
and i purposely held back
of course the king of songs
“Black or white” –
ow!
hee hee…
Oh my god, i almost failed to mention “Remember the Time” ….fwah…ultra sweet
BUT MY ALL TIME
FAVORITE MICHAEL JACKSON SONG
“Who is it”
This is the Video LINK:
By the way, i listened to this album everyday for a year. i even had a classmate who seemed to choke on fishballs
everyday, trying to do the “emotional hiccups” that Michael does in “Who is it”.
HISTORY

1. Scream (4:38)
2. They Don’t Care About Us (4:45)
3. Stranger In Moscow (5:45)
4. This Time Around (4:20)
5. Earth Song (6:45)
6. D.S. (4:50)

12. 2 Bad (4:50)
13. HIStory (6:35)
14. Little Susie (6:15)
15. Smile (4:55)
I loved SCREAM….rock/pop. He made pop look good, in a time where gangster hip hop
was sitting in as the new kings of music.
The special song once more to me, would be Stranger in Moscow..a very nice mood piece.
He manages to instill so much emotions in his songs, even more than some movies!
“They don’t really care about us.” has a super nice beat.
i know some people find Earth song a lil cheesy, but it is definitive and purposeful.
and of course the super hit
“You are not alone” Awwwwwwwwwwww
After all my jokes, i still feel a little sorrow. though autopsy is still trying to figure out why he died.
I was pretty sure it was from exhaustion. He had previous injuries, and he really wanted to put on a good show for the fans of
his already sold out concerts. He wanted to get back into that physical shape again. which is rather difficult to accomplish at his age anyways.
He was trying to make a comeback.
Perhaps a second chance, a second run at his first love, – simply entertaining people.
Be the top of his game.
So while the world debates about his death, his legacy, his character, his accusations, his good his bad,
I just want to wish him peace.
And May he moonwalk in Heaven.

He looks like a penguin, i keep thinking he is a penguin…why?

First of all…
This is my favorite comedy this year!!!!!!!
Doing that funny thing people do, i would give it 4 popcorns!!! out of 3!!!
if you can see through some SEX jokes, and alot of F words that
makes Justin Timberlake sing in my head, “F me with a river…..”
This movie could become your best friend…..great script writing!
Kudos to (screen writer) Larry Levin and (director) John Hamburg(also co writing)
…yes, even more powderful than Monsters VS Alien. (which was ok lah)
One look,
no major big stars,
ahhhh, why not wait a while, for a movie with Jack black or WILL ferrell in it
But wow, how wrong was I!
It was a great romantic comedy!
Damn honest, it cuts straight to the intimate truth between people. Damn honest show
unafraid of telling you the people stuff.
It’s like spreading butter with a CHOPPER on a bread from a hungry man who can’t find a butter knife
(what the cheem ding an means:)
Yes it is over the top, (funny, fun, Real, F words for fun, but also bringing the realism of characters)
but it is so damn honest! (hungry mah)
About characters, about the intimacy of relationship
Concept of Girlfriend VS Best Friend.
Basic Story:
A guy is going to marry the girl of his dreams, but is himself troubled about the fact that he does not have a BEST guy friend
unlike his girl who has many girlfriends. Hearing her gossipy friends say,
His strive to be perfect to make his girl happy sees him go on a ridiculous journey of “MAN dates”,
some of these dates turning out to be Gay of course.
Finally he meets an eccentric guy, who just seems to fit perfectly into his the mould of his best friend…..hmmm…..and so the story develops.
I will not spoil it for you. Haha, because i think you should watch it.
Rashida Jones: Woo Hoo

Lead actress of the show. Gives one the feeling of the best girlfriend in the world. HAha Funny sometimes, understanding…
more on the lovable side, less on the sexy, maybe sexy comes from the tan. In the future, she probably has to do some saucier roles
to break her cute character, kinda like Jessica alba Sin city (J Ab has been sexier in many other movies anyways!)
But anyways, she is rather lovable, makes me remember something about lead female actress casting, gotta be lovable in some ways
( and i am casting for a lead actress anyways)
Lead Actor Paul Rudd was brilliant!

You will also see him in “yEAR ONE” with Jack Black, woo hoo
and can you believe that he was once in ANCHORMAN, with Will ferrell, one of my all time favorites!
This guy is a natural charmer, all the ladies really love him
he is not the ladies man, he is a lady!
oops, that didn’t come out right….what i meant is that he is the type of guy(in the show) that ladies can communicate
perfectly with, sensitive, nice, and with that level of communication and care – is straight.
This is Paul Rudd’s IMDB
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0748620/
I am also glad that this show
made me spot a great talent
Jason Segel

He plays the eccentric best friend of our lead man, and the way he is
so alternate rockish, so let loose about everything, so frank, puts you in an eccentric chair with him
but the true skill is, always, you feel comfortable, unlikes other examples, where that eccentric character
does things that you cannot stomach.
This guy pulls it off naturally, and yet still be able to maintain likability. woooo
and somehow he reminds me of a penguin……hmm…

Great actor!
in summary:
this movie is one of those comedy scriptwriting stories that make you shake a little in your core
but never stirred… everything turns out right, in the most meaningful way…and in it all you find some love
gott a lot to learn from them man!
Please watch this show, bring a gf, bring a friend, or even by yourself (i did still enjoyed it)
buying ticket that time say
“I love you man, man.”
Sincerely
Ding An
