戏剧盒《白色空间》：上身不由己之“ST Life! Article”

Prepare to be provoked – A new Chinese play festival will debut the works of a new crop of playwrights who tackle edgy themes such as sex, sadomasochism and death. Adeline Chia reports.
哎，三个主题不都出现在我们《上身不由己》里头吗？
原来，也指另外两部剧。还没看过完整版的《第八签》（Lot No. 8）以及《反复仿问》（Inter|V!ew），十分期待下个星期一晚上我们内部的预演。
宣传角度难得让幕后的编剧亮相。戏剧盒的策划设想周密。
很难的⋯⋯ 演员有号召力（想看董姿艳、王德亮、黄家强还有刘晓义的演出，当然还有“我们家”的王欣以及罗子涵）、另外两位导演（排除我呵！）也值得期待（Zelda好久没参与、Loretta大概第一次排华语剧吧）。
当然，我还是偏心的，比较注意自己那部的介绍：
Fresh for the stage – Three diverse new works from first-time playwrights to be showcased at a new Chinese play festival give a new edge to Chinese theatre.
“Kok’s [Heng Leun, Artistic Director of Drama Box] favorite work is Bondage by Cheow Boon Seng, 25, which is a madcap and deconstructive piece involving ghosts, sex and drugs. It flits to and fro in time, and has snappy and erratic scenes.
It revolves around a policeman who moonlights as a tang kee (Hokkien for “medium’) at night. He gets to know two Ah Beng hooligans and realize that they have many things in common, such as a history of being bullied for their effeminate behavior.
Among other things, they end up having role-playing games with a teenage girl in a hotel room.
Kok says “the writing is very strong in this piece”.
“Coming from such a young writer, the way it deals with power and sexuality, it’s quite something,” he says. “I don’t think people my age write this way. There are many references to pop culture and the writing is very lively.
Playwright Cheow recently graduated from the prestigious Fudan University, where he studied Chinese Literature. He has written and directed school productions and acted in Drama Box’s S***hole (2004).
He says the 1 1/2-hour Bondage was inspired by his experience of seeing people around him being judged by their peers for being effeminate.
He says: “My play deals with ideas of masculinity and effeminate behavior. There are idealized gender constructs everywhere and people who don’t fulfill the stereotypes are ostracized because of their mannerisms and behavior.”
Because of the risque themes and strong language – there is lusty swearing in both Hokkien and Mandarin – the play is rated R18. It is directed by Danny Yeo and stars film-maker Loo Zihan. Getai movie 881 star Mindee Ong and stage actors Toh Wee Peng, [Neo Hai Bin] and Doreen Toh.
Cheow, who comes from a Chinese-speaking family, says he did not set out to shock with his provocative story line, but adds that “it is interesting that Chinese theatre seldom touches on such themes”.
“English theatre is relatively saturated with such themes. It will be very different experience if such a show is done in Mandarin.””
