House of Peranakan Petit

By , April 27, 2015

House of Peranakan Cuisine opened this petit restaurant at Tiong Bahru estate as fans requested for another branch closer to the West.

Peranakan favourites can be found on its menu: Ngoh Hiang ($12), Otak Otak ($12), Itek Tim ($10), Garam Assam Fish ($18), Ayam Buah Keluak ($18), Itek Sioh ($18), and Babi Ponteh ($16).

We liked most of the dishes. Nothing overly fanciful, still delicious, even heart-warming as the meal felt like a home-cooked one. (Read: House Of Peranakan Petit Tiong Bahru)

Just next door to Neon Pigeon, the team from Lolla at Ang Siang set up this produce-centric restaurant where the menu changes all the time. There are no entrees or main courses.

Signature items include Flatbread ($8-$16), Braised Tuna Eye with Salsa Verde ($440, Dog Cockle Tartare ($30) and Wagyu Ribeye Cap ($55). With these prices, be prepared to spend a small bomb.

IPPUDO SG @ Shaw Centre

By , April 11, 2015

One more Ippudo at the Orchard Road belt. The ramen exclusive to the Shaw Centre branch is the Tan Tan Tonkotsu ($16), with Japanese sesame paste blended with their signature tonkotsu broth, topped with spicy minced pork miso, pork loin chashu and coriander.

The broth is spicy but not overly, with a touch of zest from the fresh lemon. (Read: Ippudo SG Shaw Centre)

Waterfall Ristorante Italiano Shangri-La Hotel

By , April 8, 2015

The revamp of Waterfall Ristorante Italiano at Shangri-La Hotel is in line with the appointment of Chef De Cuisine Chef Marco De Vincentis who specialises in Southern Italian cuisine. Of all the dishes presented, the pasta items were also my personal favourite, especially the Tagliolini Al Pesto Siciliano ($22) – long flat ribbon pasta with ricotta cheese, pine nut, basil and roasted almond.

Other than the a la carte menu, Waterfall’s Antipasti Semi-Buffet Lunch features a rotating menu of freshly baked bread, daily fish special, cold cuts, cheeses, salads, fresh seafood, live pasta and meat carving stations, pizza-station and gelato. (Waterfall Ristorante Italiano Shangri-La Hotel)

Kko Kko Nara’s Korean Fried Chicken

By , December 3, 2013

Unlike the previous 4 where the focus is fried chicken, Kko Kko Nara is a typical Korean restaurant with the usual Korean fare, which happens to be very known for their Korean Fried Chicken. For those who love variety, get the Combo Chicken Set ($20 during lunch, $25 during dinner) which has 9 pieces with 3 different favours – original, sweet and special garlic soy sauce chicken. (My order was lost in translation with their staff though, who looks keener to watch her Korean MTVs.) The original was good enough, sweet was sticky and like sweet and sour chicken with too much sauce, and the garlic chicken evenly marinated and tasty. Overall, the chicken meat was strangely colder than it should be. Maybe it’s the aircon.

NeNe Chicken Singapore’s Korean Fried Chicken

By , December 2, 2013

NeNe Chicken used to be my favourite, until its quality took a dip. Sometimes I like it, sometimes it is so-so and cold. It is like taking a ne-ne gamble. My recommendation is the Swicy chicken, which comes in a set of 2 pieces ($8.90) or 9 piece whole chicken ($25.90). The chicken is surprisingly not oily, even though we are provided with plastic gloves. Just lick the sauce off your fingers if you are at home. Even though we left it the chicken out for some time, the batter remains crisp, and the meat succulent. (Read: NeNe Chicken (The Star Vista))

Bonchon Chicken 본촌치킨’s Korean Fried Chicken

By , November 29, 2013

Bonchon Chicken is deep fried twice – so the skin becomes crunchier and the meat less greasy when compared to the usual American fast food fried chicken. It feels kind of pricy though. A medium combo of 6 wings, 2 drumsticks with one side is $15.90, and I am only saying it because the pieces are quite small. The skin comes off in pieces, with the sauces nicely enveloping it. The meat not quite like the usual, is tasty and not too oily. Plus point, it doesn’t leave much of a stain on your fingers even if you use your hands. Despite its haphazard service, I am prepared to love this. (Read: Bonchon Chicken (Bugis+))

Imperial Treasure’s Liu Sha Bao

By , November 26, 2013

Imperial Treasure’s group of restaurants always have a certain quality to their dim sum, and do you know the restaurant at Paragon branch is the one which is ranked Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant? (Only Chinese restaurant from Singapore on that list too.) The buns are almost perfectly shaped, with the taste striking an appropriate balance between sweet and sugar. Unlike some other buns which can get too oily or rich, you would find it easy to pop more than one.

Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant’s Liu Sha Bao

By , November 25, 2013

This is a choice between Swee Choon’s and Victor’s Kitchen. I finally picked Swee Choon (although I know many will differ in opinion) because Swee Choon ($3 for 3) has a better consistency and a more pleasant eating environment (even though both fall under the same type.) Swee Choon’s interpretation is slightly sweeter, while Victor’s has the stronger salted egg yolk savour. While some of Swee Choon’s dim sum are not as consistent as we have liked, its Golden Lava buns have always been outstanding for a shop with modest beginnings, with one of my friends exclaiming it is “life-changing”.

Bosses Restaurant 黑社会’s Liu Sha Bao

By , November 21, 2013

Bosses only serve 2 dim sum items during dinner time – the Liu Sha Bao and Xiao Long Bao. Both are exceptional, I mean, when you compare to their other dishes. The restaurant with its modern black walls is relatively quieter than all the other restaurants at Vivocity which see queues during the weekends. The Signature Custard Lava Bun ($4.20) is worth my trip here, arriving steaming hot, and the orangey yellow skin remains supple fluffy even after a while. The filling flows, flows and flow – very generous, and somewhat more to the watery side.
