Density Frozen Custard

Frozen Custard, probably the first of its kind in Singapore. Prices were $4 for single scoop, $7 for double, $9.50 for triple, and $9 for a two scoop sundae with 2 toppings and sauce. The texture was true to its name ‘denser’, smooth and creamy, won’t feel like there is air or ice crystals ‘trapped’ within. It reminded me of a velvety version of thickened gelato. O’ma Spoon Korean Dessert Café

This shop means ‘mother’s spoon’’. While the Patbingsu ($11.90) and Injoelmi ($11.90) are still reasonable in price, the Choco Brownie ($18.80), Mixed Berry ($18.80) to a rather steep Mango Berry Cheesecake ($22.80) may make customers think twice. We tried the Patbingsu ($11.90) and quite liked it. Ingredients such as the red bean ‘Korean pat’ and injeolmi are imported from Korea. The milk shaved ice was smooth and finely-shaved, had a soft yet instantaneous melt-in-your-mouth effect. (Read: O’ma Spoon Marina Square)

Dazzling Café Singapore

Despite the hype, Dazzling Café dazzled for their toasts, but razzled out for the savouries. The appeal of Dazzling had to be the décor, and hospitable plus cutesy Taiwanese-style service, where waitresses dressed as Japanese-style French chambermaids serve the signature thick toasts in prettiness. We hear varied comments – the toasts were pretty, the waffles were okay, and the pastas flat-tasting. (Read: Dazzling Café Singapore Capitol Piazza)

Bing Go Jung Korean Dessert House’s new branch is at Bt Timah Plaza, a strategic venue to target the active Korean and expat community in the area. Their bingsu varieties sold here include the popular Milk & Red Bean ($11), Injeolmi ($11), Green Tea ($11) Coffee ($11) and an intriguing Tomato ($11), along with toast, grilled sandwiches and chewy waffles. The florist opens a bakery. Ah huh, popular Far East Flora collaborates with Japan’s Signifant Signifé to offer more than 40 types of bread, viennoiseries & snacks. Go for the Hainanese Chicken Bread for chicken rice in a loaf. Made from chicken soup, skinless chicken thigh, garlic, ginger and shallots, best savoured when dipped in garlicky chicken rice chilli sauce. Breakfast doesn’t get that boring anymore. House of Peranakan Cuisine opened this petit restaurant at Tiong Bahru estate as fans requested for another branch closer to the West.

Peranakan favourites can be found on its menu: Ngoh Hiang ($12), Otak Otak ($12), Itek Tim ($10), Garam Assam Fish ($18), Ayam Buah Keluak ($18), Itek Sioh ($18), and Babi Ponteh ($16).

We liked most of the dishes. Nothing overly fanciful, still delicious, even heart-warming as the meal felt like a home-cooked one. (Read: House Of Peranakan Petit Tiong Bahru)

Lollapalooza Keong Saik Road

Just next door to Neon Pigeon, the team from Lolla at Ang Siang set up this produce-centric restaurant where the menu changes all the time. There are no entrees or main courses.

Signature items include Flatbread ($8-$16), Braised Tuna Eye with Salsa Verde ($440, Dog Cockle Tartare ($30) and Wagyu Ribeye Cap ($55). With these prices, be prepared to spend a small bomb.

IPPUDO SG @ Shaw Centre

One more Ippudo at the Orchard Road belt. The ramen exclusive to the Shaw Centre branch is the Tan Tan Tonkotsu ($16), with Japanese sesame paste blended with their signature tonkotsu broth, topped with spicy minced pork miso, pork loin chashu and coriander.

Waterfall Ristorante Italiano Shangri-La Hotel

The revamp of Waterfall Ristorante Italiano at Shangri-La Hotel is in line with the appointment of Chef De Cuisine Chef Marco De Vincentis who specialises in Southern Italian cuisine. Of all the dishes presented, the pasta items were also my personal favourite, especially the Tagliolini Al Pesto Siciliano ($22) – long flat ribbon pasta with ricotta cheese, pine nut, basil and roasted almond.

Other than the a la carte menu, Waterfall’s Antipasti Semi-Buffet Lunch features a rotating menu of freshly baked bread, daily fish special, cold cuts, cheeses, salads, fresh seafood, live pasta and meat carving stations, pizza-station and gelato. (Waterfall Ristorante Italiano Shangri-La Hotel)
