Let the lunchbox save the Earth

2007_03_27_lunchbox1

What have you done as part of the society to control waste management? School is our second home and that’s where all our waste accumulates with the big population of students in school. Schools cannot be entirely litter free if everybody does not play their part as members of the society.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Very often, the wastes we produce are like those “invisible details” that we fail to see! Although we do not see waste, it has to be disposed of in a safe and hygienic manner such as the 3Rs, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle being in placed.

However, the rate at we are disposing rubbish is increasing rapidly and the image is threatening.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

What our school has already been already doing:

  • Recycling bins, recycling corner
    • Recycling bins in class for plastic and paper.
    • Recycling corner at level 1
    • Students to bring the recycling bins & empty them in the recycling bins at level 1
  • Teachers bring their own lunch boxes
    • Hygiene purposes.
    • Don’t have to use Styrofoam boxes + plastic spoons/forks
  • Pond – water from toilet?

As students, we have suggested ways to improve the situation of waste. Instead of dumping our rubbish in recycle bins, we can make use of it for our personal use such as

  • Use recycled paper to make notebook. (and sell to students/teachers/staff)
  • Print notes/exam papers on recycled/’green’ papers
  • Food waste – worm compost bin to store food waste generated.
  • Papers that have been used on one side can be used for rough workings instead of throwing them away
  • Old/faulty electrical appliances can be sold to the recycling company (recycle e-waste)
  • Old electrical appliances can be resold instead of throwing them away.
  • Profits collected from such activities can be used to decorate classrooms to promote further waste management and sustain the measures to carry out waste management.

We must savage the situation immediately and we can start from having such school waste management program annually to encourage everybody in reducing waste and save the earth.

Brainstorm..before The Storm hits! A 10yr plan to save the Earth

Brainstorm..before The Storm hits!

Environmental seminars, I must say, are getting hot these days, just like our Earth. On the 6th of November 2009, I attended a seminar called “ Waste Management- More than just rubbish”  in Commonwealth Secondary School. Prior to this event, I have gone on a learning journey to Pulau Semakau, the first offshore landfill in the world, and also the last landfill of Singapore. In a way, it is the last vestige of hope for us to cling onto before wastes run out of places to be managed come year 2045. So what do we do? Is it possible to draft out a ten- year plan to accept  integrate these sustainable waste management measures to combat further degradation of our environment?

These are the types of questions that challenge the minds of these young participants throughout the entire 4 hour of this talk. The guest speaker introduced the topic of waste management as sexy- which was amusing, but quite adequate as the opportunities of turning rubbish into resources are exciting and abound in this new age. The rest of the talk were hinged on his personal experiences of being a contractor who had to tear down buildings and use the concrete built within this structure as reusable resources instead of wastes. Believe it or not, he could turn this so-called rubbish into whooping tens of thousands in revenue! Not only that, it also gave a bonus to the environment. Wouldn’t you call that killing two birds with one stone?

As a teen facilitator, I guided my group to present their solutions to these questions after the talk. Theories and ideas flew out, and scratches of marker pens could be heard throughout the entire hall. Being idealistic youths, we really hope to see residential blocks with proper waste disposal system in place, where everyone will be encouraged to separate their domestic waste conveniently.

Admittedly, people have been pounded with green campaigns lately, but we feel that people can be swayed even more through the influence of their celebrities, or can I say, entertainment idols. Not everyone seek inspiration through political leaders, so tapping into the potential of various artistes and their hordes of fans could possibly garner more attention, funding and effect.

Moving on from there, the envisioned 10-Year-Plan also includes sweeping changes in industries such as more digital modes of advertisement, for instance: less fliers, and paper- saving practices in the ever-increasing offices in this cosmopolitan city.

As the awareness towards daily environmentally-friendly practice increases, we also realize that we were using papers that were bound to be used for only once in this environmental talk before they would be disposed of, whether recycled or otherwise. Wasn’t that a little ironic?

But after pondering for a moment, I realized that this was indeed the crux of the seminar: to value these daily discarded items as a resource. In fact, the key to being friendly towards our environment is not just by leaving it in a pristine state as of the rainforests basins of the world, but to practise sustainable use of these natural resources. The concept is simple, that is to use minimally and always seek to replenish the resources at a faster rate than they are exploited. Yet once again, the saying “ it is always easier said than done” comes to mind.

However, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and we have done so by having seminars such as this. Within the time span of 2 hours, it is an insurmountable task to draft out the details of this 10-Year- Plan. However, this session gave us meaningful insights of the vision that youths have of the future 10 years down the road. By then, we would be the ones who are developing the nation and implementing these ideas. Indeed, it is never too early to start this brainstorm, before ravaging storms of nature impose an even greater threat to humanity.

Y.O.G can be GREEN too

cutlery.gif

Youth Olympic Games 2010 is just round the corner and as we all know, such international events tend to generate a lot of waste. So what are some of the things we can do to ensure a GREEN YOG?

Here are some ideas we came up with during  the environment seminar held on 6th Nov in our school.

-          Provide athletes with non-disposable water bottles in order to minimize waste.

-          Get volunteers to check athletes rooms to ensure they have turned off all the lights and air conditioning.

-          Provide them non-disposable cutlery for use throughout the stay in Singapore.

These are just some of the possible ideas our group came out with and I think it would be great if everyone can come out with suggestions on how to keep YOG a Green event. Don’t be afraid to share and propose your ideas!

36 years later, this will not be what you see …

Daily rubbish output in Singapore has grown to 2.63 tonnes in 2008, which is about the size of 890 football fields of the height of an average human. This is a problem as large volumes of rubbish can significantly reduce the lifespan of our landfill sites. The last mainland landfill site, was closed in 30 Apr 1999.

To overcome this, construction of Semakau Landfill by building a 7km stretch of rock bunds around Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng started in 1995. Construction started out in 1995. Semakau Landfill started operation on 1 Apr 1999 and is expected to last till 2045. It covers an area of 350 hectares and has a landfill capacity of 63 million m3. During construction, care is taken not to harm the corals growing around Pulau Semakau. Mangroves are also replanted after the construction.

Waste is basically categorized into two categories: incinerable and non-incinerable. Incinerable waste refers to domestic garbage and is sent to incineration plants, whereby their volume is reduced by 90%. This incineration ash, together with the non-incinerable waste, which refers to construction materials, is sent over to Tuas Marine Transfer Station, where they are weighed before being loaded into barges which then ship the waste to Semakau Landfill. At Semakau Landfill, the waste is unloaded to dumptrucks which transport the waste around the island for dumping.

When we went for a field trip to Semakau Landfill on 23 Oct 2009, we were amazed to find out that the landfill site was so clean and odourless that people who are ignorant will not believe you if you were to tell them that it is a landfill site.

Semakau Landfill is expected to last till 2045, 36 years from now. You may not live to that day, but think about the future generation, what would happen when Semakau Landfill were to be completely used up? Unless Singapore could go about spending another load of billions of dollars, the only best way out is to reduce the waste output.

Pulau Semakau

Save the Earth, Don’t Eat Fast Food! (And Save your waistline too)

Earth, a living planet. It might be the only place for us, humans, to live. Thinking about moving to Mars? It is possible, but certainly not now. It is our duty to take care of the Mother Earth, and the talk “A Living Planet – You and I” just reminded me how important this duty is.

Mr. Jim P. Leape the director general of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) international went to our school to give a talk regarding our beloved planet, Earth. It was quite an interesting talk, and he started off by explaining what has been done by WWF to save our living planet.

Some projects that had been undertaken by WWF, including the ‘Heart of Borneo’ project and saving the coral triangle that covers parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines. He also reminded us of the threat that is being faced by Earth, namely the climate change that has been aggravated by our behaviour.

This threat has adversely affected the condition of our nature. Climate change has caused the melting of the ice in the two poles and also Greenland. It is very surprising that the sea level will rise with about 7m if all the ice in Greenland melted. Climate change has also prevented us to enjoy the beauty of nature, for example, the coral reefs that might disappear. Can you imagine living without our favourite seafood as coastal food production may just drop by 80% as a result of this threat?

So, what can we do? There are so many things that can be done by us to save our Mother Earth. We can start by doing simple tasks like taking public transportation for transport. We can also stop buying fast food! Sounds weird? Here is one little known fact. One burger coupled with a pack of french fries and a cup of coke needs 5000 litres of water to be prepared before being served. So to prevent the waste of water, we should not purchase fast food often. So let’s start the change ourselves and by doing simple things. Remember, a journey of a thousand miles starts with one small step.

The CommonGreen Project
