My New Year Resolution
Here is a post from our new Guest Blogger
Happy New Year to one and all!
2007 marked another major step towards a higher level of awareness of global warming and climate change. The earlier part of the year recorded major events organised by non-government organisations (NGOs). They served as movements to encourage the government to take actions. These occurred in many countries including those in Europe. Two high profile presentations by Al Gore (The Inconvenient Truth) and Leonardo Di Caprio (The Eleventh Hour) brought the whole issue of climate change to another siginificant level. Later on, the governments started to initiate plans to fight global warming. NEA produced an advertisement featuring four young people preaching on environmental conservation. In addition, the Bali conference in the recent weeks was daily news topic around the world. As 2008 arrives, more of such initiatives will evolve to include more nation leaders and also youth leaders globally.
At a personal level, I managed to adopt the following climate friendly habits:
1) Not using air-conditioning when sleeping for most of the time
2) Recycled all papers and plastics that could and should be recycled
3) Encouraged recycling to my family members. Now, my parents also practise recycling
4) Conserve water when bathing
For 2008, I plan to master the following habits:
1) Not using air-conditioning when sleeping all of the time
2) Not just recycle but reduce and reuse
3) Practise fuel efficient way of driving to minimise my own carbon footprint
I am confident that with the constant effort environmental groups and government bodies put in to tackle climate change in Singapore, more members of the public will be converted. I forsee greater collaborations between Asian countries with leadership from fast developing countries like China.
