What Is Your God-Given Talent? Start Living the Dream!

By , February 10, 2014 10:43 pm

Most of us go to work everyday to keep the order ticking along. At times, we probably think we’d rather be out fishing… but we understand that our commitments are such that we need to be able to provide – food on the table, safety and shelter for our loved ones, education and development for the little ones, to name but a few.

(Scroll to bottom for videos)

Living the dream - http://www.mikemasse.com/

When we ourselves were younger, we often had dreams that later in life might seem somewhat unfulfilled – perhaps it’s playing a professional sport, having paintings displayed in a national gallery or singing in front of an audience of screaming fans.

Whatever your dream is or was, I firmly believe that God has provided us all with at least one (or more) very special gifts. I also believe that these gifts are what our dreams are made of.

So my message today is quite simple – regardless of your age, status or current lot in life. Regardless of whether you are a student, a fireman, a lawyer, a banker :), a plumber… get out there and do something that you love – something that you have an aptitude for, something that makes you feel awesome about yourself.

It doesn’t matter if nobody else cares or listens – as long as you can remember what it was that brought a feeling of completeness to your soul. Go to the park and kick a football… take time out and buy a canvas and brushes… or simply, just sing a song that you love. It will all come flooding back to you.

So what is your God-given talent??

I recently became aware of a couple of guys that are living their dream. If what I read serves me correct, these blokes are attornies. But as well as meeting their commitments to family and loved ones, they are also doing what they love and what they definitely have a God-given talent for – making beautiful sweet sounds…

Interestingly, I first viewed one of their videos on YouTube through a mate of mine sharing it on Facebook. This buddy of mine, Lui, also happens to be a singing partner of mine from around 20+ years ago – we were in a teenage group in the 80s and believe it or not, had a pretty solid following – I remember touring through country Queensland performing to (at times) screaming schoolgirls, signing autographs on publicity pictures and quite simply – living the dream of that time in our lives.

I’m not going to say that we were anywhere close to having the talent of Mike Masse and Jeff Hall – but it is what we did, what we loved.

Following are a few of Mike and Jeff’s videos that really moved me and left me with the ‘Wow’ factor.

Firstly, a cover version of Toto’s ‘Africa’:

[youtube MLrC7e3vSv8]

How many Dads can listen to such a beautiful version of ‘Cat’s in the Cradle’ without tearing up?:

[youtube MEvfJSB7K8M]

Finally, for all the Eagles fans… ‘Hotel California’ – or is it?? Hmmm? One more Time??:

[youtube kgg2yuA9Xek]

Now do yourself a favour!! – Remember your dream. Live it – even if it’s just personally (or in a Pizza shop). It’s your God-given talent and right! 🙂

SKW Live – Be A Star… Why I Love My Grassroots!

Well I can certainly tell you, dear reader – life is about as busy as it gets right now!!

pic 01

Don’t misunderstand me – I am not complaining, just perhaps making excuses why I’m so far behind with my blogging. When you mix a very busy day job and career with outside activities such as press appearances and media interviews, along with the wonderful time I spend coordinating the family around their various hobbies and interests and of course, my commitments to GRL (Grassroots Leader) community activities, I reckon it’s very lucky that I can survive with only a handful of hours sleep every night. 🙂

Coming off back-to-back weekends where I spent some time with the Singapore Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong – firstly at the AMK Task Force Work Plan Seminar held at ITE College Central Campus and last Saturday on my home turf in Fernvale (story time with the kids) – I was fortunate enough to be reminded once again of why it is that I love my involvement in Grassroots.

You see, last Saturday evening I was invited to take on a new persona – the choice would be mine… the ‘evil’ Simon Cowell or the more pleasant Randy Jackson. I think I opted more for the latter, as I participated as a guest judge in the grand final of the ‘Sengkang West Live – Be A Star’ competition.

The competition, which has been months in the making, culminated with this huge event held at the Anchorvale Community Club MPH. Organized by the Sengang West YEC (youth executive committee), eleven finalists took the stage one final time in an attempt to be crowned the ‘SKW Live Star’.

Prior to the event, I really didn’t know what to expect – but I really must say now that the level of young talent in our local community is astounding! Every single performer put on a real show, and in a way, I wish that each of them could have been awarded first place.

Having said that, a young lady by the name of Cheryl came on stage and clearly blew everyone in the audience away (including myself) with that difficult to describe thing called the ‘X-factor’. Judging was based on certain criteria – tone, pitch, overall talent, stage presence, presentation, interpretation (I’m elaborating a little on the what was on the scoresheet, but you get what I mean).

The Winner

The Winner

This winner had it all – in my comments and feedback, for one of those very rare moments I was lost for words. The remarks I did make began with a ‘Wow’! Quite literally, the ballad component of her act left me shivering with goosebumps, followed by a desire to stand on my chair and dance as she leapt into a very upbeat performance which even included a rap… Like I said, ‘Wow’!

The audience was extremely appreciative with people dancing, whistling, screaming, clapping – during the performance.

The Winner

The Winner

I am so glad and honoured to have been asked (along with Peter Leow and three other professional judges) to represent Sengkang West Grassroots organizations as a guest judge, and even happier to have witnessed all of this young talent.

In true Singapore style, there was a broad mix of cultures on display – along with the English perorming acts, we were treated to a very diverse range – from ballads sung in mandarin to what I could only describe as a ‘Bollywood style’ song in Tamil… once again, inspiring the urge to get up and dance.

I was given an appreciation award for this privelege (completely unnecessary but very grateful)

Let me tell you – Life is good here on the red dot!!

Congratulations for a job well done to the YEC organizing committee

A Proud Day For Singapore – In A Heartbeat!

By , August 9, 2011 11:03 pm

WOW!!! What more can I say… every year the spectacular that is the celebration of Singapore’s independence just gets bigger and better. I’m not just talking about the fireworks and performances – the emotion that this event inspires is enough to bring goosebumps to your skin and to cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand tall.

ndp201102

This year, the ‘WOW’ moment for me, was the end of the performance of the theme song, “In a Heartbeat”, when the boy just ran full sprint across the stage to end in a huge hug… I’m not ashamed to say, that with tears blurring my vision, I reached down and picked up two kids and squeezed them tight with all of my might.

Anyone who witnessed the moment at this year’s National Day Parade – Singaporean or otherwise – and was not absolutely moved, should urgently visit their local doctor for a heart check-up (to see if you still have one). 🙂

Congratulations Singapore, on this very special day!!

In A Heartbeat Lyrics (Complete) – Song by Sylvia Ratonel

I have a dream of starting a life
I have a hope, a flame alight
This is the moment, freedom is calling
This is my start, a new beginning

I have a heart, it beats for you
A step at a time, our spirit renew
Living together under the sun
Our hearts will beat as one

In a heartbeat, I’ll be there for you
In a heartbeat, no one else will do
In a heartbeat, we will always be
Together, united; you and me

In a heartbeat, time has passed us by
In a heartbeat, we will reach the sky
In a heartbeat, this will always be
Our people, our country
This is our family

Nothing will stand in our way
We can be strong today
The flame is alive
This is our life

In a heartbeat, I’ll be there for you
In a heartbeat, no one else will do
In a heartbeat, we will always be
Together, united; you and me

In a heartbeat, time has passed us by
In a heartbeat, we will reach the sky
In a heartbeat, this will always be
Our people, our country
This is our family

WTH!? Huge Amounts Of Cuteness Overload – 郑家洋

By , July 11, 2011 1:52 am

Ok – here’s a very important message for all TV and Movie producers and directors, talent and casting agents and modelling studios – you better get in quick!!

Just check out this absolute CUTENESS OVERLOAD!! Some kids are just born to be stars, and the talent put forth by this particular child along with his amazing good looks will leave audiences in the future wanting more.

Cuteness Overload - Jaime 郑家洋

Cuteness Overload - Jaime 郑家洋

You may well be right to say that I am extremely biased (and overwhelmingly proud), given that Jaime is my son, but please – just look at the pictures and watch the short video below… there is no way you could disagree!

At almost 4-years of age, Jaime Zheng Jiayang (郑家洋) is a product of my Australian heritage (Caucasian, with some indigenous mixture a couple of generations back) and my beautiful wife Sammi (Chinese race – Shanghainese by birth). When it comes to a video camera or DSLR, he is as photogenic and confident as you can possibly get.

Another short note – watch out for his younger brother also (Casey), who is now coming to 10-months old.

Jacko Is A Scarecrow OR A Scarecrow Is Jacko

By , November 2, 2010 9:25 pm

Whichever way you look at it, the crows must be freaking out, man!!

A Scarecrow as Michael Jackson in Taiwan

A Scarecrow as Michael Jackson in Taiwan

Many (some) of us would be old enough to remember Michael Jackson’s portrayal of the Scarecrow in the 1978 movie, ‘The Wiz’ – the musical version of ‘The Wizard Of Oz’. If that wasn’t scary enough, a diehard Taiwanese fan of Jacko uses scarecrows to immortalize the late King of Pop.

In the fields of Changhua County, Michael Jackson is still making his moves. Lee Ping-Hsing said that “I thought that since Michael is good at ‘grabbing his bird,’ I’d invite Michael to grab birds in our fields.”

The scarecrows are made from wooden skeletons for the body and sponges for the faces. They are dressed and posed to resemble Jacko in various ‘signature moves’ from his video clips.

Mr Lee said, “I was yelled at by my grandpa. He said his spirit could come back and haunt us, but I think it would be nice if Michael could come over.”

And for those readers who’ve never had a chance to see ‘The Wiz’, here’s a compilation of some of the coolest moments of the movie… ‘EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD’!! (Also, how unbelievable is Diana Ross??)

More Sesame Street Cameos – The Top 10

By , October 13, 2010 9:18 pm

I recently alerted my readers to the banned (for being too sexy) cameo appearance of Katy Perry with Elmo singing her hit, ‘Hot N Cold’ on Sesame Street… it’s extremely important to note that I broke this news in Asian cyberspace long before any of the news or video sites took up on the story – remember, if it’s bizarre or seriously WTH in nature, you’ll always see it first here at my OMY Star Blog and my Legacy Blog 🙂

The sultry and sexy - yummmmy - Norah Jones with Elmo!

Following on from this, Ms Perry is not the first international superstar to appear on the long-running kids show… Not by any means! Below are what have been considered the Top 10 cameo appearances on Sesame Street – in no particular order – suffice to say, that I am an absolutely HUGE fan of Norah Jones, so I have strategically placed her appearance with Elmo using her hit ‘Don’t Know Why’ to teach about the letter ‘Y’ at the very top of this list:

For The Boys – Ang Moh Is A ‘Closet’ Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) Fan?

By , September 6, 2010 10:01 pm

Time for a COLD shower…?

Jolin was once known as the 'Britney Spears of the East'

Jolin was once known as the 'Britney Spears of the East'

I’ve been ridiculed for it often, and for those of my readers who are not already aware, I’m not ashamed to say (much to the chagrin of my wife) that this ang moh is a huge Jolin Tsai fan!

So now that I’m no longer in the ‘closet’ on this topic, I think that I’m going to have to go out and buy flowers and perhaps a branded handbag for Sammi – along with some serious crawling – to get back in the good books after writing this article.

For my fellow ‘westerners’, Jolin Tsai is a superstar pop singer from Taiwan. In 2003, she was dubbed the ‘Britney Spears of the East’ – I think that’s actually giving Britney way too much credit!! According to my wife, her current appearance is due to some very serious surgery… (that does sort of make me feel a bit down) – regardless, as well as being a great singer, dancer and all-round entertainer she really can produce some breathtaking eye-candy.

It’s been well-spoken about for a few weeks now, but I couldn’t resist embedding her latest video clip here on my blog for all the boys (ok, ok… and the girls) to join me in my admiration of such supurb videography.

You see, the video entitled, “玩愛之徒” (“Love Player”) is the story of an unfaithful boyfriend… how that then translates into an awesome strip tease starting from a low cut-top and hot pants to a steamy bathtub scene is beyond me, but there you have it… maybe it’s time for a very COLD shower… ENJOY!!

(NB: Sometimes I really hate producers and their ‘pixellation’ authority)
