Yes, that’s Smith Leong and yours truly being featured in one of the demo video. My Mandarin not bad one okay! Don’t play play. Last time I always get As for Chinese during my PSLE and secondary school days. In fact, I was often the teacher’s pet during Chinese lessons. True Story. If not I would not be working in omy.sg, a Chinese and English bilingual news and entertainment portal. 🙂

About the Speak Mandarin Campaign 2011/2012

This year marks the 32nd anniversary of this nationwide campaign that was first launched in 1979 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The objective then was to encourage Chinese Singaporeans to use Mandarin instead of dialects. Over the years, the campaign has shifted its focus to encourage Chinese Singaporeans to both embrace speaking Mandarin and enjoy an appreciation for Chinese culture and language.

omy.sg and Wanbao Festive Gourmet Food Trail – Ngee Ann City Crystal Jade Palace (义安城翡翠皇宫) and Swissotel Merchant Court

By , November 11, 2011 10:22 am

In a special collaboration with eight well-known restaurants, omy.sg and Lianhe Wanbao, together with veterian food critic Ah Lun (黄卓伦) will be bringing a group of readers on an exclusive festive gourmet food trail for four consecutive Saturdays.

Each week, a group of 80+ readers will visit two restaurants together with Ah Lun to sample their Chinese New Year and Christmas special dishes.

Other than eating, participants were given the rare opportunities to meet with the restaurants’ chef who answered their questions and even shared a few cooking tips on the spot.

Last Saturday was the first event. omy Blog Club bloggers, Stephanie He, Jeanine Quee and Jacqualine Chan were invited to join Ah Lun for the food trail. I was there too as a working staff.

We visited Ngee Ann City Crystal Jade Palace (义安城翡翠皇宫) first for a Chinese New Year meal and Swissotel Merchant Court next for a Christmas meal. The festive bells and whistles came really early for me this year!

To find out more about the event, you can read the bloggers’ reviews; omy.sg’s event report or watch omy.sg’s vodcast coverage.

The last time I worked on the food trail events, my waist grew thicker by quite a few cm, thanks to the endless rich feasting for 5 consecutive Saturdays. There is really such a thing as an overload of good food; not that I am complaining! 🙂

Happy diners at the fourth Ah Lun food trail

Happy diners at the fourth Ah Lun food trail

In a special collaboration with ten well-known restaurants, omy.sg and Lianhe Wanbao, together with veterian food critic Ah Lun (黄卓伦) brought a group of readers on exclusive gourmet food trails for five consecutive Saturdays.

Each week, a group of 80+ readers visited two restaurants together with Ah Lun to sample their signature dishes as well as specially created dishes, not available on the restaurants’ menu.

Other than eating, participants also had the rare opportunities to meet with the restaurants’ chefs, some of them even sharing a few cooking tips on the spot.

For the fourth event, I attended the food trail together with fellow bloggers, Yong Wei and Mint Leong.

We visited the Straits Café @ Rendezvous Hotel for the first session and Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant at Turf City (马城阿一海鲜) for the latter session.

Here’s the menu for the first stop:

养颜甘榜鸡汤
菊花香露鳕鱼
芒果妈蜜鸡卷
鸿运糟香排骨
Surprise Dishes: Signature laksa, Durian cake, Almond jelly with sea coconut

I enjoyed the Marmite mango chicken and their signature, award-winning laksa. The food at Straits Cafe are generally quite simple, hence it’s harder to be particularly fond of any dishes.

Moving on to Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant at Turf City, here’s the menu at the second stop:

白玉藏珍炖翅裙
玉树麒麟星斑球
松荔茸香酥大鸭
鲜蟹肉片儿汤面
Surprise Dishes: Golden coin meat and Salted egg yolk kueh

The two surprise dishes were really memorable. Both items are not available on their regular menu, but I think they will be crowd favourites if introduced. The head chef must have put in a lot of effort to design and craft these two dishes.

I enjoyed all the other dishes as well. Each aesthetically pleasing and rich in flavour. This is definitely one of the best menu I have sampled so far for this food trail.

Kudos to the head chef and the staff at Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant.
